Ippon Seoi Nage

Ippon Seoi Nage translates to One shoulder throw. For this throw you are going to isolate the shoulder of your uke (partner) and use it to control them.

1. Take a grip of your partners gi with your left hand, you want to hold between your uki’s shoulder and lapel.

2. Pull your partner towards you and up, this will move his weight and make it easier to throw them.

3. Move your right arm under your left and wrap it around your partners arm so you kill the distance and lock their shoulder to the inside of your elbow joint.

4. Whilst performing part 2, take a small step with your right leg and swing your left leg around so you are facing the same direction as your partner. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and your knees should be bent so your hips are below your partners.

4. Bend your knees and pull your partners shoulder over yours, draw it across your body and towards your opposite hip. Half way through the throw straighten your legs to finish.

5. Make sure you go slow and hold your partners arm when completing the throw. This should slow the fall and help avoid injury. Remember, if you break your partner, you have nobody to train with.

n.b you can also hold your partners sleeve when performing this throw as shown in the demonstration video, this is a good place to start.
